The Joint Program on Education

JPC2 Adult Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education (NFBE):

Under JPC2 Adult Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education (NFBE) efforts were made to increase awareness and financial allocations for adult literacy and NFBE programs, e.g. consultative roundtables with parliamentarians, development of standard PC1 and media sensitization workshops. Refinement and approval of provincial and national literacy plans were supported and meetings of provincial Literacy Forums convened in two provinces to consider 5 Year Literacy Plans, plus two meetings of the National Literacy Forum. Federal and provincial allocations for literacy/NFBE remained low during 2010 and require continued advocacy and concerted efforts.

However, considerable support was provided under JPC2 for establishment of different learning centres: literacy centres were opened; NFBE centres were organized for 250 children labourers. 100 home-based literacy centres were established benefiting 2,000 girl students; 60 NFE centres were set up in Lahore and Kasur, wherein 1,800 working children were enrolled. In addition 115 Community Learning Centres were established for rural female youth, wherein 3,000 illiterates became literate and acquired income generation skills to break their poverty cycle.
