The Joint Program on Health and Population


 JPC5 HIV and AIDS focused on advocacy with parliamentarians, sensitisation of media, capacity building of healthcare workers and provision of treatment and care services to people with HIV and AIDS. The number of people treated for HIV increased by 30%, with a total of 1,900 people treated by end 2010, awareness sessions were conducted with 6,000 sex workers, and outreach and awareness activities were done with adolescents in streets, migrants labour and refugees. 15% coverage benchmark was achieved by reaching 6,000 sec workers through 13 initiatives in urban areas. Assessments were done on same-sex contacts, particularly among at-risk male adolescents followed by voluntary confidential counseling and testing. Process was initiated for integration of HIV prevention education into school curriculum and awareness raising workshops were conducted with parliamentarians, civil society and media. Special initiatives for addressing issues of women living with HIV were launched in collaboration with women departments and civil society.
