CHF-DMA-0489-088 “Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Intervention for drought affected Populations in Somalia” – $3,222,949

High malnutrition levels in Somalia are exacerbated by shortage of safe water and long absences of mothers searching for food and water. Water Shortages are reported as the highest priority need in all reports from the field partners.

In some cases urban and small town water supplies are under huge stress due to in-migration of pastoralists and other affected people so there are frequent breakdowns, rapidly rising prices for water and therefore limited access for poorest section of community (especially IDPs). UNICEF’s ongoing humanitarian programme for WASH sector in 2011 has been orientated to address 4 core areas of need:

• Maintain reliable water supply from strategic boreholes & other water points (drought response)

• Ensure access to water in key grazing areas where pastoralists have migrated (drought response)

• Maintain reliable access to water and sanitation for IDPs and other vulnerable communities (essential core humanitarian activities)

• Increase access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene in high risk areas to reduce malnutrition and prevent outbreak of disease"

The first two outcomes will benefit mainly pastoralists and other drought affected families in the high priority areas identfied by the WASH cluster (see attached WASH priority area map).
