Guatemala is located within the seven countries (Ethiopia, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Nepal, Niger and Rwanda) which are part of the Joint Programme "Accelerating the economic empowerment of rural women". This initiative is launched within the framework of the fifty sixth session of the Commission on the status of women (CSW) on the priority theme "the empowerment of rural women and their role in the eradication of hunger and poverty, development and the current challenges". The four United Nations agencies that drive the initiative the Organization of the United Nations for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UNWOMEN) and the World Food Programme (WFP), are to draw up a proposal where enhance their strengths and capabilities within the framework of the four results of the programme and locate the area of intervention on criteria such as: economic situation of women, poverty rates, levels of organization, institutional presence, local capacities to address the economic problems of women and the presence of agencies in the territory.

The programme has four main outcomes. The first, improve food security, including by increasing the productive potential of women and access to and control over productive resources and services essential for food security and nutrition. The second focused to increase the income of women, supports the strategies of life of rural women, improving their income opportunities along the food value chain. Supports business initiatives by women and promotes linkages with higher value markets, including opportunities offered by the programmes of food assistance from the WFP.

The third result promotes the empowerment of rural women, expanding its leadership and participation in their communities and rural institutions, so that they can influence the definition of polices and local and departmental plans and public investment based on their priorities. It includes work with men to ensure political and social recognition of the role of women from the community. It aims to strengthen networks and platforms of women's organizations involved in regional areas.

Finally, the fourth focuses on support to Central and local institutions, as responsible for implementing policies with a gender perspective and promote legislative reforms and policies for the effective implementation of the rights of rural women, as well as their access to productive and financial assets, technical assistance, generation of decent employment, equal pay, access to social protection and infrastructure. To achieve these results, are proposed as strategies support the Organization of groups of women producers, provide specialized technical assistance, areas of training and education according to their needs and real opportunities, and strengthen the institutions of the State in the incorporation of strategies for equity of gender into their policies and programmes.
