About
This project will be implemented in eight villages in Katayala locality in South Darfur state. The area witnessed major communal conflicts between Gimer and Falata tribes, Gimer and Taisha and Gimir and Benehalba in the last twenty years. The conflict between Falata and Gimir started in 1984 and is renewed whenever the shortage of rain is severe and the competition over resources in its peak. The purpose of this project is to promote peaceful co-existence and reduce conflict and prevent them from escalating into wide communal conflict in two administrative unit in Katayala locality. The main causes of conflict in the targeted area are competition over resources (water, land etc), scarcity of resources and poor environmental governance, historical conflict over tribal land and inconsistency between land tenure/ownership laws and Hakura system & absence of law enforcement. This project will improve access to justice and promote reconciliation by establishing community based reconciliation mechanism that handle disputes using reconciliatory approach, build trust between rival groups and restore confidence. The project will build the capacity of the established mechanims and provide them with necessary technically and logistical support. The project will also diversify livelihood opportunities and assist the vulnerable groups and youth to start a living by providing them with vocational training and support them with IGA. To address causes of conflict, promote interactions between rival groups and support the common interest the project will improve access to services and natural resources by constructing 6 classes and 2 offices and drilling and rehabilitation of water sources in the area. To solicit youth support to peace initiatives the project will construct and equip 4 youth centres. To improve access and management of natural resources the project will support the demarcation of the tertiary migratory route passing through the targeted villages. Recent Documents
