The Joint Program on Agriculture, Rural Development and Poverty Reduction

JPC1 Pro-Poor Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development:

A major focus of activities in 2010 under JPC1 Pro-Poor Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development was on increasing agricultural productivity, promoting food security, improving skills for manufacturing and enhancing livelihood opportunities for rural populations. A dual strategy was followed of providing necessary inputs notably wheat, maize, vegetable and other seeds, fertilizer, tools, poultry birds, goats and other agricultural inputs alongside capacity building support and installing technology. The latter was provided in fields such as kitchen gardening, crop production, poultry management, livestock management and manufacturing skills enhancement. A notable innovation in this regard was the establishment of Farmers Field Schools (FFS). The dual approach was designed to ensure beneficiary households were able to make optimal use of the agriculture inputs given to them. Another important aspect was introduction of latest training technologies for leather products in training institutions besides as well as technology for the wool industry.
