One Planet Multi-Partner Trust Fund 

ObjectivesFund scope

The One Planet Multi-Partner Trust Fund (One Planet MPTF) is a collaborative platform that addresses challenges related to SDG 12 and sustainable consumption and production. Fund partners rely on their collective expertise and resources to assist global partners and national governments in implementing projects that address roadblocks to achieving SDG 12 or overcome fragmented approaches.  

Fund action is designed to meet four strategic objectives:  

• Be an effective conduit for achieving SDG 12 targets. 
• Kick-start ambitious action by offering tools and solutions that support the uptake of sustainable consumption and production.  
• Lead the implementation of SDG 12 practices.  
• Demonstrate the far-reaching and positive benefits of sustainable consumption and production, and how it addresses current environmental and social challenges. 

Whether directly or indirectly, achievements under SDG 12 contribute significantly to all other Sustainable Development Goals. The Fund expands the availability of, and access to, financial resources in support of actions that are transformational and draw non-traditional development partners into the fold, like private and public sector corporations, or financial institutions.  

Theory of change and strategic framework 

One Planet MPTF leads transformative change towards the adoption and growth of sustainable consumption and production practices. Implementing innovative approaches and projects through global (35%) and national (65%) streams increases the amount of change in practices towards SDG 12, and creates opportunities for applying and scaling up tools and solutions, increases sustainable consumption commitments, and addresses environmental and social challenges linked to SDG 12. 

Thematic areas covered by the Fund include sustainable food systems; sustainable lifestyle and education; consumer information; sustainable tourism; sustainable buildings and construction, and sustainable public procurement. 

GovernanceGovernance arrangements

Steering Committee 

As part of its responsibilities, the Steering Committee provides overall strategic guidance on the MPTF, takes up allocation decisions by consensus, reviews Fund portfolios, and follows up on implementation updates. 

Secretariat 

Hosted by UN Environment, the Secretariat oversees coordination and operational functioning of the One Planet MPTF. Part of the One Planet network, the Secretariat accesses funds once annual plans are approved by the Steering Committee. 

One Planet MPTF Thematic Assistance Team  

The role of Thematic Assistance Team is to coordinate the development of annual work-plans under global components, and country-specific project proposals in national components. The Team provides guidance on the technical and operational aspects of Fund activities. 

Administrative Agent 

Participating Organizations receive funds through the Administrative Agent, Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Office. The Administrative Agent is responsible for the receipt, administration and management of contributions from donors, disbursement of funds to Participating Organizations, and consolidation and dissemination of progress reports to donors.

Programme implementation is the responsibility of Participating Organizations. Each organization is programmatically and financially responsible for resources received

The One Planet Multi-Partner Trust Fund incentivizes global and national partners to adopt sustainable consumption and production practices to achieve SDG 12 targets and make good on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
